Kyambogo University is desirous of providing sustained high academic and professional training in the fields of Education, Business, Management, Communication, and Technology. The University is not only cognizant of the need for manpower training and development in these fields but also of the high demand for training by the school leavers and underemployed persons. It is for these reasons that the Faculty of Vocational Studies designed the degree course leading to the award of the Bachelor of Administrative and Secretarial Science (BAS).
However, due to the rapidly changing business environment, the job market calls for graduates who are above the ordinary secretary and have up-to-date knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding the general office environment. It is against this background that the School has decided to review the programme in terms of name, content enrichment, dropping some courses and introduction of more specialisations (options) and adoption of the university wide format of course codes. The name of the course shall therefore be: Bachelor of Administrative Science (BAS)
Background to the Review of the Programme
After running the Programme for over 9 years now, the School of Management and Entrepreneurship found it necessary to integrate Administration and Secretarial Components and to enrich key areas such as Information Communications Technology (ICT), Accounting and Corporate Secretarial Practice. Therefore a number of necessary modifications in the Programme structure and content have been made to reflect sufficient knowledge and skills in Administration, Management, Secretarial Studies, Public Sector Accounting and Management and Information Communication Technology. Supervised internship has been introduced, to be done during the recess term. This would enable the University to produce balanced Administrators, Personal Assistants, and Mobilizers.
The programme shall be housed and run by the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship.
Changed Course Codes
The alpha-numeric course codes were rebranded as follows: the alpha part now begins with the letter ‘M’ which is the first letter of the school, followed by initials of the Department where the course is housed (ie AF for Accounting and Finance, BS and AS for Business Administration, PL for Procurement and MS for Management Science.
Hence in this programme structure, MMS is a course from the Department of Management Science, MAF from Accounting and Finance, MAS and MBS from Business Administration, and MPL from Procurement and Marketing Departments.
The numeric part of the Course Code changed from the hitherto three digits to four digits to address coding challenges faced by departments with more than nine (9) papers. What did not change is the coding philosophy of the numeric part of the course code: first digit for year of study, second digit for the semester, and now the last two represent the paper number.
Modernity is posing a great challenge of producing personnel like Administrators, Managers, and Mobilisers. Today’s modern office requires highly skilled and competent personnel who are self-motivated and capable of taking on administrative roles besides managing the office.
The work environment today is such that career secretaries find themselves doing administrative work while career administrators find themselves in positions such as personal assistants, secretaries to chief executive positions that require knowledge and skills in both professions. In addition, Information Technology being an engine of both business and public office, there is need to introduce, expand, and consolidate its appreciation at degree level in order to promote proficiency in today’s office. This reviewed programme therefore is meant to produce personnel that can blend or synchronise secretarial and administrative skills to enhance organisational performance.
The programme will produce the following categories of personnel:
- Administrative Secretaries
- Public Administrators (CAO)
- Records Managers
- Office Managers / Executive Officers
- Rural Development Mobilisers
- Front Desk Managers
- Personal Assistants
- Executive Secretaries
The programme shall target A’ Level Certificate holders, Diploma holders, and persons who have passed Mature Age Examinations conducted by a University accredited by the National Council for Higher Education or by the latter on behalf of Kyambogo University
